Balkan Beats has gained great popularity in Dutch clubs and concerthalls over the last few years. But in former Yugoslavia, not so many people know what the Netherlands have to offer musically and culturally. The city of The Hague and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs wish to change that situation. Together with the Dutch Fund for the Arts, The Hague Pop Centre, Dom Omladine in Belgrade, Kriterion in Sarajevo and Illectricity in Zagreb they organise Roadworks; a touring cultural festival in April. Dutch bands Voicst and Mala Vita kick off the project with a special concert in The Hague on the 19th of March.
The Roadworks project visits Zagreb on the 22nd of April, Sarajevo on the 24th of April and Belgrade on the 26th of April. In each city Dutch band Voicst will give a show in a big club. In Zagreb they play at Sirup Club with Tobogan, in Sarajevo at Fis Kultura with KZU and in Belgrade at Dom Omladine with Petrol and Repetitor. Before each evening show, Voicst will tour the centre of the cities in the afternoon. From the back of a converted garbage truck, built by designers Natwerk, they will stage miniconcerts on squares and crowded streets.
Everyday I Work On The Road
During the miniconcerts about 5000 cd singles will be handed out. These cd’s contain Voicst’s most popular song: Everyday I Work On The Road. It was written as a love song, but the lyrics might also be read as a text about a shared past that’s now in ruin, about the questions and doubts that this break up brings, about how we should work on our future everyday and how we will finally meet each other on that road. This theme bares resemblance to the relationship between the countries of former Yugoslavia, but also between these countries and the Netherlands; a relation that for some is still defined by grieves from the past.
Besides Voicst’s version of the song, there is also a Serbo-Croatian version by Mala Vita on the cd. The cd-sleeve serves as announcement for the big concerts in the evenings. The special Serbo-Croatian version of the single will be performed by Mala Vita for the first time on the 19th of March, during the presentation of their new cd In Exilio in The Hague.
