Forget about techno. Forget about minimal, house, funk or jazz. From now on these are just guidelines into the world of Shinedoe, a place where electronic music gets a whole new perspective. Aptly titled No Boundaries the Amsterdam based dj/producer has chosen a broad sound for her new album, always focused on the dancefloor, never predictable. After a couple of world conquering years, where the dj managed to perfect her unique mixing style, this record can easily be seen as the next step in Shinedoe’s pioneering existence.
Because wasn’t it Dillema, the first track ever released by Shinedoe, that many considered to be clubhit of 2004 right after its release? Right at the start of a global minimal-hype it was this deeply grooving record to be one of the trendsetting releases; from that moment on Shinedoe’s name was definitely settled, as well as her talent to produce groundbreaking new dance music. After releasing her debut album Sound Travelling in 2006 Shinedoe was even more considered to be an unstoppable force in the constantly expanding techno scene, always looking for her own sound, never going with the flow.
Therefore, on her long awaited second album, Shinedoe hasn’t chosen the easy route. No Boundaries can be seen as a yellow bricked road right through all the sounds that defined her dj-sets these last years. Result is a record where rhythmic dancefloor tracks fluently take turns with organic sounding jam sessions, warm and jazzy, deep and funky.
“I’ve always followed my soul”, explains Shinedoe. “Music comes straight from my heart, that’s also how Sound Travelling was conceived. Right now, however, I’ve progressed a couple of years. I noticed I’ve been pushing myself more and more not to repeat myself, that’s definitely something you can hear on No Boundaries. This is a totally different record than Sound Travelling, mainly because of the influences from dub, funk and jazz. To me this is a signal I’ve grown as an artist, it’s become a lot harder to label me in one particular music style.”
Call it groundbreaking, with opening track Below it’s immediately clear Shinedoe’s still aiming for the dancefloor. An irresistible minimal groove, a tempting bassline and warm soothing synth form an ideal starting point for this album. Taking it up a notch, Bounce to This features a more funk-influenced house sound, just waiting to rock dancefloors around the globe.
From that moment on, the record blazes away. Jazz it Up is a track like you never heard it from Shinedoe, but leaves you wondering why not. Deep drum rolls build around a funky housebeat and saxophone-sample in an almost hypnotizing groove –just try to stand still on this one. Finding a Balance, the fourth track on the album, also shows a side we didn’t know from Shinedoe. It’s like she gave the extremely rhythmic productions from her past a stylish deephouse-twist –this time, you get the best of both worlds.
Title song No Boundaries marks another special moment, with Shinedoe showcasing her first collaboration with a vocalist. Guest of honor on this unadulterated oldskool housetrack is Bumpy aka Mr J, repeating Shinedoe’s life motto as a recurring mantra: ‘We can be free, with no boundaries’.
As if she wants to fortify these words, there’s the firm and hunted Higher. Produced under her Innersphere-alias we can hear Shinedoe doing what she does best; subtle percussion and airy piano-loops put together in an unevitable dancefloor bomb. We can be sure now, this is a producer who’s freely developed her sound getting awfully close to perfection. With the atmospheric closing piece Just for Us she underlines her border crossing ambition; warm, jazzy grooves against headstrong minimal techno.
“When I’m dj’ing, the music can move into any direction. I’m not limiting myself to one or two music styles, it’s simply about the rhythms that make my heart skip a beat”, Shinedoe says. “It’s exactly that feeling I wanted to bring to this record. There are some dancefloor tracks on it, like Jazz it Up and Higher, but I also think it’s special working with a vocalist for the first time on No Boundaries. Therefore, I really see this record as a milestone; each track has its own feel, shifting from housey atmospheres to warm, minimal techno grooves –it’s the first time I’ve sounded so diverse.”
Looking back on the impact her debut album made, Shinedoe’s follow up No Boundaries will undoubtedly receive a warm welcome. For the dj/producer, who already saw her worldwide bookings grow steadily these last years, this album means an important step in her career. And for the house and techno, we now know the music will diversify itself the next couple of years, gaining more funk and jazz influences in straight up dancefloor material –with a little help from the future predictions of Shinedoe.
